I am sure of the fact that most people would have read or heard about the famous short story, The Last Leaf at least once in their lives. I personally consider it to be one of the greatest works of O. Henry. My first reaction on reading it was feeling a sense of wow. What I learnt from this story was to not base my understanding of things on rules of thumb or superstitions. It taught me not to be a pessimist and spread the vibes of negativity all around. Moreover, through this story I realised and understood the significance of sacrificing oneself for the sake of others. These are those lessons which have the power to change not only our lives but the lives of others as well, if we understood and applied them in the right way.
The plot focusses on how an artist gives a dying woman the inspiration to live. Behrman is my favorite character in the story. Although he is not the protagonist, his role is what makes the story complete and meaningful. Nowadays, the teachings of the elders, of being loving to everyone is just a lesson to be heard and forgotten and no more an idea to be actually internalised. In such times, Behrman is an inspiration to all, he inspires us to help, to love and to care without any demands or expectations, even for those who are not related to us by blood.
Indeed, The Last Leaf is worth reading and admiring too! I would recommend everyone to read it at least once because this is something that will inspire every reader in their own way.
