Are you a Netflix fan? Well then, Breaking Bad is a name that you are most likely to be familiar with. This iconic series fuses multiple genres such as black comedy, tragedy, crime thriller and of course science fiction. And if you have binge-watched the show, you would also know that it has immortalised its protagonists: Walter White, played by Bryan Cranston and Jesse Pinkman, played by Aaron Paul. Recently, their bronze statues have been unveiled at the Albuquerque Convention Centre in New Mexico, USA. They have been donated by Breaking Bad creator in collaboration with Sony Pictures. Want to know who crafted these statues? The sculptures have been made by famous sculptor Trevor Grove and overseen by the American Fine Arts Foundry. These bronze replicas were unveiled by the actors themselves. Here’s how it unfolded.
Who all attended the unveiling at Albuquerque?
Apart from Cranston and Paul others from the industry also attended the unveiling ceremony. They include Gilligan, actor Dean Norris who played the role of Hank Schrader and actress Rhea Seehorn who now plays a pivotal role in the show’s ongoing prequel Better Call Saul. The entire creative team of the show gathered around for a group image, while the larger-than-life bronze statues shone bright in the background.
Legacy of Breaking Bad
Breaking Bad ran successfully for a total of five seasons, from 2008 to 2013 on the American TV channel AMC and was later introduced on Netflix that led to its global popularity. In fact, over the years, this critically acclaimed show had gained multiple prizes, such as Primetime Emmy, Golden Globes and Peabody Awards.
The show, set and shot across Albuquerque is about a terminally-ill (cancer) high-school chemistry teacher named Walter White who not only creates but also distributes meth (yes, the narcotic!) by partnering with his long-time student and protege Jesse Pinkman. Wondering why a high-school teacher is making crystal meth? Well, the triggers are multi-folded: Stage-three lung cancer, and the fact that he is an underpaid and overqualified academician who has nothing to lose. It’s almost as if turning to the world of crime keeps him going, as he tries to secure his family’s future by making fast and easy money. The violent, cliff-hanger plot twists have made the show stand out over the years.
This popular American TV show made it to the Guinness World Records in 2013 for being the most critically acclaimed television show of all time. In fact, a sequel film was even released in 2019 called El Camino: A Breaking Bad Movie. Lest we forget, the prequel, Better Call Saul, which is currently being aired is in its final (sixth) season. The crime-legal drama is about, like Breaking Bad, largely emphasises on the real-life struggles of drug addiction and crime in Albuquerque.
