The state of Karnataka announced its list of the winners of the prestigious Rajyotsava awards on Sunday, October 31. Some of the well-known recipients of this award are Dr. Sudarshan who is the head of state’s technical advisory committee on Covid-19 (TAC), former BJP MLC PV Krishna Bhatt and international tennis player Rohan Bopanna. The list of winners also included Kambala jockey Ravikumar Aladangadi, Yakshagana artist Jayanand Sampaje, writer Parvati G. Aital, etc. A total of 66 individuals and 10 organisations received this award. Karnataka CM, Basvaraj Bommai, took to his Twitter handle to congratulate all the awardees on Sunday. The awards will formally be conferred in the evening today. The Karnataka Day parade and celebrations are all set to take place at Nehru Maidan.

What is Karnataka/Kannada Rajyotsava?
The state of Karnataka was officially formed in the year 1956. Ever since then, November 1 has been celebrated as Karnataka Rajyotsava or Karnataka Day. This state was formed when all Kannada-speaking regions came together on the linguistic grounds. This culmination of the Kannada-speaking was based on the vision of Alura Venkata Rao, who is also known as Karnataka Kulapurohita. November 1 is declared as a state holiday for Karnataka, with the Chief Minister delivering a speech annually. The red and yellow state flag of Karnataka is also hoisted, with community festivals and orchestra.
The history of the Karnataka Rajyotsava awards
The Rajyotsava awards, which are also popularly known as the Rajyotsava Prashasti, were instituted in the year 1966. They were awarded all years since their institution, barring 1977, 1978, 1979,1980 and 2009. The 2021 award ceremony will be the first one hosted in person since the coronavirus pandemic.
To whom are these awards conferred?
The aim of these awards is to recognise those citizens of Karnataka who made significant contributions in their respective fields of competence. The different fields which the winners belong to include arts, industry, education, literature, science, sports, social service, medicine and public affairs.
A few of the recipients of these awards have not been citizens of Karnataka. However, their significant contribution to the state made them eligible to receive the award.
What does the Karnataka Rajyotsava award include?
Apart from the title of awardee of this prestigious accolade, the winners also receive ₹ 1,00,000 in cash, a 10gm gold medal as well as a citation.
