The word ‘cake’ comes from the Old Norse term ‘kaka’, which translates to ‘cookie’. Ancient Greeks had their own version of cake called ‘plakous’. These were made using eggs, milk, nuts and honey and were reminiscent of the modern-day baklava. It was only in the 17th century, with the advent of advanced technologies, that cakes began to resemble our present-day cakes. By the 20th century, we had developed many different types of cakes.
